Laya Gelff, a woman with accomplished diversity is a theatrical talent agent, producer, writer, photographer and film maker. She has had an extensive career in the entertainment business.
She is the owner and president of The Laya Gelff Theatrical Agency, which is licensed, bonded and holds franchises with SAG, AFTRA, AEA, DGA and WGA. Based in the Los Angeles suburb of Encino, the agency has established an exceptional reputation for representing talented professional actors, writers and directors in films, theater and television.
She was the Awards Director for the National Emmy awards television shows, and associate producer for NBC News. In addition to her agency, she is the producer, director, co-writer, and booking agent of two major one-man shows:
EINSTEIN: THE PRACTICAL BOHEMIAN
HEMINGWAY: ON THE EDGE both starring nationally acclaimed actor Ed Metzger.
Throughout the years that Ed has performed his portrayals, Laya and Ed continue their research, delving into the distinctive lives of Albert Einstein and Ernest Hemingway. They have accumulated a wealth of knowledge with unique recollections from family, friends and professionals of the two great men. They are most proud that Ed’s EINSTEIN show received an endorsement from The Einstein Family.
Laya arranges both of Ed’s reenactments at major theaters throughout the country. But she has a dilemma. Performing the two different characters keeps Metzger alternating between ignoring barbers and using razors, or using barbers and ignoring razors. Since Hemingway had short hair and a beard, and Einstein had a droopy moustache and long locks, she has to synchronize the theatrical bookings with the length of Ed’s hair. For many years, she has effectively coordinated the hair predicament. Her behind the scenes endeavors are an integral component to their success.
She produced shows Off-Broadway, NY; The John F. Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, Washington DC; The Grand Opera House, Galveston Island TX; The Spoleto Festival, Charleston SC; Beckman Theatre, Pasadena CA; Reichhold Center Theatre, St. Thomas USVI; and many major theaters throughout the country, including DuPont’s Nobel Prize Awards, Wilmington DE.
Laya regularly serves as a Judge on the Blue Ribbon Panels for the Emmy Awards and also judges the selection process of the Internship Program for the Television Academy. She has been a guest lecturer about "The Biz" at various university Theater Arts departments throughout the country. She is a member of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, The Dramatists Guild, Western-Southern and Mid-West Arts Associations, and The Association of Arts Presenters.
Knowing the powerful effect Theater Arts can have on students, Laya and Ed created ACTORFEST as a valuable therapeutic tool for students to enhance discipline and self-esteem. The program has been highly regarded by specialized facilities which search for ways to add values to incarcerated youth.
They also developed a nationally acclaimed science education school out-reach presentation, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH EINSTEIN. This interactive dynamic assembly program encourages curiosity in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for under-served school children throughout the country inspiring students to consider science as a future career.
During a time when it was not fashionable to be a working Mom, Laya raised her two children by herself working in the entertainment industry at high-power jobs. She is proud that as adults they became loving, caring and independent professionals.
As a husband and wife team, Laya and Ed enjoy traveling the world together with their many projects. She is never without her cameras documenting it all.
